Why Healing Relationships is Important for Spiritual Development
“Much of what holds people back in life is their irresolved feelings and judgments regarding their relationships, even relationships in the distant past. These feelings and judgments act as a kind of dam—holding people’s feelings back, arresting them in place, influencing their perception of other people and disabling them from being able to be emotionally open and accessible to their children and to other people.”
From a very early age, having developed relationships with our parents, siblings, and other influential people in our lives, we may feel wounded by some of these relationships, causing us to harbour negative feelings and judgements. We carry these with us throughout our lives, like carrying a suitcase which gets heavier and heavier…holding us back from our true purpose in life.
These negative feelings or judgments can pollute our current relationships with our unforgiveness of the past, and with new relationships also. When we meet somebody for the first time, for example, we often try to discern what type of person they might be, but we often get it completely wrong…It’s a bit like trying to judge a book by its cover. There may be something about that person, the way they walk or talk, that reminds us of a previous relationship and this can stir up bad feelings, prompting irrational judgements and preventing us from seeing that person for who they really are.
“They try to replace an old relationship with a new relationship, but they end up damaging the new relationship with their own unforgiveness regarding those people in their past.”
Relationships play an important role in our Life Purpose, and so healing past relationships is an essential part of our Spiritual Development.
“This kind of inner work is very important. It is part of your preparation. It is part of preparing you for a greater purpose in the world. It is part of your learning about relationships and higher purpose.”
